Angel Babies Matter Network and Community Partners Assemble 425 Care Packages in Rescheduled MLK Day of Service

Houston, TX

Though delayed by weather, the commitment to serve never wavered.

In March 2025, Angel Babies Matter Network (ABMN) was honored to host its rescheduled MLK Day of Service, originally planned for January 20, 2025 but rescheduled to March 10th. United once again with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Chi Omicron Omega Chapter, Alpha Alpha Eta Omega Chapter, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® Sigma Gamma Lambda Chapter, this heartfelt community service day resulted in the assembly of 425 care packages for mothers coping with the devastating loss of a baby.

A Sobering Reality

Volunteers were reminded of the mental health toll that pregnancy and infant loss can take. An estimated 1 in 4 mothers experiences pregnancy loss, and 1 in 6 faces mental health challenges such as Postpartum Depression or PTSD. Across the U.S., more than 24,000 mothers endure this unimaginable grief every year.

Honoring Dr. King Through Service

This service day was part of the international “We Are One: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service” initiative. Volunteers showed up with warmth and dedication, carrying out Dr. King’s legacy through collective action, compassion, and healing.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

The new date for this event coincided with International Women’s Day, adding another powerful layer of meaning to the day. Angel Babies Matter Network proudly recognized and celebrated the strength, resilience, and contributions of women—especially those navigating the difficult journey of pregnancy and infant loss. The atmosphere was one of unity, remembrance, and empowerment.

Partners in Healing

Joining this year’s event were Tamika Lamark and Jayla Daniel from The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, who brought additional supplies and mental health resources. Their presence underscored the importance of mental wellness in the grieving process and the need for ongoing community support.

County Recognition

Angel Babies Matter Network and its partners also received special recognition from Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones. Her office presented Certificates of Appreciation to the three collaborating chapters, honoring their commitment to serving mothers and families across Harris County.

Behind the Scenes

The success of the day would not have been possible without the ABMN leadership team, who coordinated logistics, prepared the venue, and ensured every detail was thoughtfully handled:

  • Bilal Houston, Operations Manager
  • Tracey R. Hilton, Board President
  • Felicia Moore, Director of Communications
  • Miranda Evans, Volunteer Coordinator
  • Juan “Angel” Gonzales, Logistics Support
  • Doreen Owens Saizan, Donor and Supporter

From assembling packages to welcoming volunteers, this team worked with heart and purpose.

These packages will be later distributed to hospitals across Houston, placing comfort and compassion directly into the hands of grieving mothers.
